A Guide to Moving Abroad
Emigrating can be both an exhilarating and daunting experience – the stresses associated with moving home are magnified innumerably when moving abroad, but with many believing that a better quality of life is to be found outside of the UK, the rewards can be much greater. At Britannia Turnbulls, we’ve helped countless families with their relocation, and have built up a wealth of knowledge to help make the move easier.
Do Your Research
Before you take the plunge and move overseas, do your research on your chosen location. Most countries operate much differently to England, so thoroughly investigate issues that may affect you. We’d recommend that you research the following:
- Visa requirements
- Taxes
- Political stance
- Healthcare
- Insurance
- Property market
- School systems
- Road systems
By getting to know the ins and outs of a country, you’ll be able to see how feasible you living there will be.
Get Organised
Once you’ve done your research, it’s time to get organised for your move. There are a few basics to get in hand first, such as applying for your visa, finding a house and getting a job. We’d recommend booking several house viewings over a period of a few weeks to allow you to really get the feel for the environment and the neighbourhood. Unless you are retiring, getting a new job is a necessity to starting a life, and you’ll find that for some countries it is a requirement to get a Visa. Apply for jobs online, have phone or video interviews and book any face-to-face interviews for the same period as your house hunting to kill two birds with one stone.
Alternatively, if you are retiring, make sure you contact the HMRC to have your pension payments made to you in your new country.
Moving Your Belongings
Having your personal belongings moved to your new country can be rather stressful, which is why we’d always recommend you take advantage of a professional moving service to eradicate the stress from the experience. Not only will hiring professionals ensure that your belongings are moved securely, you can even enlist their help in packing your belongings efficiently and neatly to make the unpacking process easier. Knowing that the transferring of your belongings is in safe hands can ease your mind and allow you to focus on other details of the move.
Take this opportunity to declutter and rid yourself of belongings that you don’t need anymore – this will make the packing and unpacking quicker and easier and can prevent your new home from being cluttered up unnecessarily.
Taking Your Pets
Moving your pets to a new country can be a distressing experience. It is best to try and make this experience as calm and straightforward as possible by enlisting a professional mover.
